Broadswords look kinda similar to rapiers, but are much heavier, bigger and more deadly, since they are often used in close combat, to strike from the horseman's saddle.
Riders like swedish Reiters, english Ironsides and austrian Cuirassiers or polish Iron Cavalry and polish Winged Hussairs often use some kind of body protection, armor, therefore rapiers are not that good when it comes to penetrating them. Thus, western cavalry prefers to use these babies, which are far more effective.
Still, construciton is pretty much the same, it's sometimes hard to spot the difference between broadswords and rapiers, therefore, these images below are here to help understand ;)
Also, just like rapiers, broadswords might look cheaper or expensive, depending on the uset. Still, a rapier is much more symbolic and decorative among the troops and officers. Broadwords are used only on the battlefield, not to show around, so it's uncommon for their users to invest a lot in them.
They often might use them in the battle, but then walk around the city with a rapier, since rapiers are just "cooler" ;)
Some of the factions that use broadswords:
- Swedish
- English / British
- Prussians
- City of Gdansk
- Courlanders
- Austrians
- Danes
- Dutch
Broadswords are very rarely used by the polish troops, tho they are seen among the corsair crew of "Mars" since some of those crewmembers are recruited in Gdansk, which is largely influenced by western-european culture and some others have their roots in other western-european cities or provinces...
